Specifications of Apple MacBook Pro 15

The MacBook Pro 15 is the first major redesign in recent years. As well as a sleeker and lighter chassis, highlight a large clear Touch Bar. This is a small screen above the keyboard and replaces the function keys. Our review shows that the functionality mainly depends on software support, but it can really make handling somewhat more complicated in practice.

One of the biggest problems is probably the change from the port. Although 4x Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) makes enough devices, you will need adapters in the future. Despite some issues, however, the current MacBook Pro is still a good product in many ways. These include great cases, excellent display, and low emissions.

The current test sample is a high-end model, where we check (almost) all upgrades at Apple's online store: Core i7-6920HQ (Skylake), 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM, 1 TB PCIe-SSD, and AMD Radeon Pro 460. An entry-level model available for $ 32,000.

Both MacBook models when Pro 15 obviously use the same chassis construction, so we will not cover parts like Case, Connectivity, Input Devices in this article. All this information is available in our in-depth study of entry-level models with the i7-6700HQ and Radeon Pro 450 cores. Instead, we focus on performance (enhancements) of the components.

DISPLAY

Similar to previous entry-level configurations reviewed from Apple MacBook Pro 15, our current test models are equipped with APPA030 panels, still IPS screens with 2880x1800 pixels resolution, resulting in 220 PPI pixel density. There is no scaling problem, which is typical for MacOS, so you can always enjoy sharp images.

This time, we measure the Windows screen via Bootcamp to get additional measurements. Results are slightly worse than the first test models (also APPA030), but they are still pretty good in general. The average luminance is 400 nits and can also be used on battery power. So far so good, but Apple seems to be using a different panel. Our test model with Core i7-6820HQ is less powerful and AMD Radeon Pro 455 comes with APPA031 panel, which feels brighter up to 560 nits.

PERFORMANCE

We have already mentioned that the test model is the current fastest model of the Apple MacBook Pro 15 lineup. However, the upgrade is not cheap: Core i7-6920HQ (up to 3.8 GHz) adds Rp.4.200.000 and AMD Radeon Pro 460 (4 GB GDDR5) adds RP.2.600.000. The most expensive upgrade jumps from 256 GB SSD with 1 TB model, where Apple charges a hefty sum of Rp.8.000.000 All models are currently available with 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM.


Processor
The Intel Core i7-6920HQ is one of the fastest quad-core mobile processors (TDP: 45 watts) of the Skylake generation and runs at 2.9 GHz and Turbo up to 3.8 GHz (2 core: up to 3.6 GHz, 4 core: Up to 3.4 GHz). The Turbo level is therefore identical to the new Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ core, while the direct successor, i7-7920HQ is up to 300 MHz faster. Like other products from the past, Apple essentially deleted the usual TDP limits and allowed continuous power consumption of 100 watts. Therefore temperature is a limiting factor only.

System performance
The top model of the MacBook when Pro 15 succeeds with excellent results in PCMark synthetic 8 benchmarks (Windows Bootcamp) and can easily beat the sisters. It is a very fast notebook thanks to its powerful components, and the response handling is great fun while wearing it.

Storage device
All three configurations of the MacBook Pro chip 15 use the same flash storage, only the capacity of different solder models. Our version with 1 TB is slightly faster than 256 GB model. We can specify a sequential transfer rate up to 2000 MB / s, so this is one of the fastest SSDs. It is also up to 500 MB / s faster (sequential write) than the entry-level model.

GPU Performance
Dedicated graphics card is the AMD Radeon Pro 460, which is based on a smaller Polaris 11 chip. Unlike the two less powerful Radeon Pro 450 and Radeon Pro 455 models, however, the 460 utilizes the full amount of shaders (1024). Another difference is the VRAM, because only 460 comes with 4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM. MacOS will automatically switch between a dedicated Radeon GPU and integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 depending on the workload, but Windows (Bootcamp) can only use dedicated GPU.

We use 3DMark (Windows Bootcamp) for benchmarks. The Radeon Pro 460 sits at the expected level between Nvidia GTX 960m and GTX 965M both in 3DMark 11 as well as 3DMark Fire Strikes (GPU subscores). However, two new Pascal GPUs GeForce GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti are 30 and 70% faster in 3DMark today. OpenGL performance is equivalent to Nvidia Quadro M1000M and approximately 10% behind Quadro M2000M in accordance with the benchmark Unigine Loire.

The smaller Radeon Pro 450 gets beaten by 40 to 50% in general, so a GPU upgrade is the best way to improve the current MacBook Pro's performance. Like the processor, GPU performance is not reduced with battery power.

Gaming performance
Radeon Pro 460 with the old GeForce GTX 960m in benchmark gaming, but the GTX 965M and the new Pascal chip in particular usually feels faster.

We can see profits of about 30 to 40% for the Radeon Pro 460 compared to the Radeon Pro 450 from the entry-level model, but there can be an outlier depending on the game. Many modern games can be played smoothly in high detail in Full HD. Only more demanding games like "Rise of the Tomb Raider" will require some settings to be reduced to ensure a smooth frame rate.

Battery performance
There seems to be some optimization of the new Apple MacBook Pro 15 reviews at the end of last year. Laptops are now 15 minutes more than 76-Wh batteries in WLAN tests on adjustable luminance of 150 nits. The video runtime is even 30 minutes away. Practical runtimes from 9 to 10 hours are easy enough to last on a full business day. As with the previous test model, the battery will last a little more than 50 minutes under load.
